
A widespread severe weather outbreak on June 1, 2026, impacted multiple regions of the United States, bringing destructive thunderstorm winds to Alabama while powerful supercell thunderstorms produced large hail across parts of Colorado and the central High Plains. The event generated hundreds of severe weather reports stretching from the Rocky Mountains to the Deep South. These included damaging winds, large hail, structural damage, power outages, and at least one reported tornadic circulation in western Nebraska.
Alabama Bears the Brunt of Damaging Winds
The most widespread impacts occurred across Alabama. There, severe thunderstorms swept from northwest Alabama through central and southeastern portions of the state during the afternoon and evening hours.
The event began across Lauderdale, Lawrence, Limestone, and Morgan Counties, where strong thunderstorm winds brought down numerous trees and power lines. As a result, roads became blocked by fallen trees, several homes were damaged, and power outages began to spread across the region. In the aftermath, one home near Killen was struck by a falling tree, while multiple roads became impassable due to debris.
As the storms pushed eastward, damage intensified across Morgan County. Communities including Decatur, Hartselle, Trinity, Somerville, Falkville, and Priceville reported a nearly continuous stream of wind damage. Trees were uprooted, power lines were torn down, and several homes sustained damage from falling trees. Numerous roads were completely blocked, creating hazardous travel conditions throughout the county.
One of the most significant incidents occurred at Little Mountain Marina in Marshall County, where severe winds reportedly destroyed nine recreational vehicles. Two injuries were reported at the location, making it one of the most serious impacts documented during the event. Additionally, large trees were brought down throughout the marina area.
Farther south and east, the storms expanded into Jefferson, Blount, Walker, Fayette, Etowah, St. Clair, Shelby, Talladega, Calhoun, Randolph, Chambers, Lee, Elmore, Tallapoosa, Macon, Montgomery, Pike, Dale, Houston, Covington, and Geneva Counties. Numerous reports described trees falling onto homes, vehicles, mobile homes, and power lines. Subsequently, several communities experienced widespread power outages as electrical infrastructure was damaged by falling trees and limbs.
Particularly notable damage included:
- A metal hay barn destroyed in Limestone County.
- Multiple homes struck by trees in Jefferson, Morgan, Shelby, Talladega, and Elmore Counties.
- A tree falling completely through a home near Titus in Elmore County.
- Trees falling onto vehicles in Warrior, Alexander City, and other communities.
- Extensive road closures caused by downed trees and power lines across much of the state.
The sheer number of wind damage reports suggests that many locations likely experienced wind gusts exceeding 60 mph. In isolated areas, even stronger winds were possible, which could cause concentrated pockets of significant damage.
Colorado Supercells Produce Significant Hail
While Alabama dealt with widespread wind damage, a separate corridor of severe weather developed across eastern Colorado. There, supercell thunderstorms produced numerous reports of large hail.
The Denver metropolitan area was particularly hard hit. Reports of quarter-sized hail were common across Denver, Aurora, Watkins, Bennett, and surrounding communities. Several locations reported larger stones ranging from half-dollar size to golf ball size.
The most impressive hail reports came from eastern Colorado, where hail reached up to two inches in diameter near Woodrow in Washington County. Moreover, hail of this size is comparable to a hen egg and is capable of causing significant damage to vehicles, roofs, windows, crops, and other property.
Additional notable Colorado hail reports included:
- Golf ball-sized hail near Bennett.
- Ping pong ball-sized hail near Bennett and Palmer Lake.
- Half dollar-sized hail near Aurora, Greenland, Simla, and other locations.
- The concentration of hail reports across eastern Colorado indicates several well-developed supercell thunderstorms with strong rotating updrafts. These updrafts were capable of supporting large hail growth.
A Multi-State Severe Weather Event
Although Alabama experienced the most widespread impacts from damaging winds, severe weather was reported from the Rocky Mountains to the Southeast. Large hail affected Colorado, Wyoming, Kansas, Missouri, and Texas. Meanwhile, damaging winds caused impacts across Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia, Mississippi, Arkansas, and several other states. The event also produced a reported tornado circulation near Mitchell, Nebraska. There, storm chasers observed a broad circulation on the ground and a nearby funnel cloud.
This outbreak serves as a reminder that severe weather can manifest in different forms across the same storm system. While residents of Alabama dealt with widespread wind damage, power outages, and structural impacts, communities across Colorado faced the threat of damaging hail from powerful supercell thunderstorms. Taken together, the reports paint a picture of a significant and geographically-expansive severe weather event affecting much of the central and eastern United States.
