113 MPH Wind Gust, Large Hail, and Widespread Storm Damage Reported Across Kansas and Colorado on June 8, 2026

Destructive straight-line winds were the defining weather story across the central Plains on June 8, 2026. A possible 113 mph wind gust was reported near Salina, Kansas. There was widespread infrastructure damage, overturned vehicles, and giant hail measuring up to 3.4 inches in diameter.

Thunderstorms developed across portions of Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas, and surrounding states throughout the afternoon and evening. These produced a combination of severe wind, large hail, and a handful of tornado reports. While isolated tornadoes occurred, the most significant impacts came from an extensive corridor of damaging winds. These winds swept across central Kansas and parts of the High Plains.

Extreme Wind Reports Across Central Kansas

The most notable reports of the day came from central Kansas, where multiple measured wind gusts exceeded 90 mph.

A Kansas State Mesonet site near Ash Grove measured an 86 mph wind gust during the evening. Additional observations included a 98 mph gust near Smolan and a 92 mph gust near Gypsum. Even more powerful, a possible 113 mph wind gust was reported near Salina Regional Airport. (This value has warranted further investigation and verification.) Nearby, a vehicle-mounted anemometer measured a separate 111 mph wind gust west-northwest of Gypsum.

The intense winds caused widespread damage across several counties. Reports included overturned semi-trucks along Interstate 70, collapsed grain bins, snapped utility poles, uprooted trees, damaged railroad crossing equipment, and an airport hangar that was partially collapsed near Herington. Additionally, emergency managers also reported multiple power outages as the storms moved eastward across the state.

The combination of measured wind speeds and documented damage suggests that portions of central Kansas experienced some of the strongest non-tornadic wind impacts.

Giant Hail Pummels Eastern Colorado

While damaging winds dominated headlines, several storms also produced giant hail across eastern Colorado. There were also reports of giant hail in nearby portions of western Kansas and Nebraska.

The largest hail report of the day came near Cedar Point, Colorado, where hail measuring 3.4 inches in diameter was reported. Additional reports included multiple instances of hail reaching 3 inches in diameter near Burlington, Colorado. There were also numerous reports ranging from golf ball to baseball size across Lincoln, Elbert, Kit Carson, and surrounding counties.

Earlier in the day, storms in Nebraska produced hail up to 2.5 inches in diameter near Beaver City. Numerous additional reports of golf ball and larger hail were received across Kansas, Wyoming, and Colorado. These reports were made as supercell thunderstorms tracked eastward through the evening.

Hail of this size is capable of causing significant damage to vehicles, roofs, crops, and windows. This is particularly true in rural communities where many of the strongest storms occurred.

Limited Tornado Activity Reported

Despite the widespread weather, tornado activity remained relatively limited. Three tornado reports were received nationwide. A brief tornado was confirmed near Centerville, Pennsylvania, with National Weather Service survey work ongoing to determine its final rating and path characteristics. Additionally, two landspout tornadoes were reported in Lipscomb County, Texas, and Scotts Bluff County, Nebraska.

Compared to the extensive wind and hail activity observed across the Plains, tornadoes played a much smaller role in the day’s severe weather impacts.

Storms Produce Damage Across Multiple States

Beyond the most heavily affected areas of Kansas and Colorado, severe thunderstorms generated damage reports across Nebraska, Missouri, Kentucky, North Carolina, and other parts of the central United States.

Reports included downed trees, damaged power lines, overturned mobile homes, and scattered structural damage. Numerous communities experienced localized power outages as severe thunderstorm winds moved through during the evening and overnight hours.

The widespread geographic extent of the reports highlights the large-scale nature of the severe weather event. However, the most extreme impacts were concentrated across Kansas.

As additional storm surveys and data reviews are completed, some of the highest wind measurements reported during this event may receive further scrutiny. Regardless, the combination of destructive winds, giant hail, transportation disruptions, and infrastructure damage made this one of the most significant severe weather days across the central Plains so far this season.
