Straight-Line Winds Topple Trees and Power Lines Across the East U.S. on June 12, 2026

Severe thunderstorms swept across large portions of the eastern United States on June 12, 2026. The storms produced widespread wind damage from the Southern Appalachians through the Mid-Atlantic and into the Northeast. While only isolated tornadoes and scattered hail reports were documented, straight-line winds became the primary hazard. As a result, trees were toppled, power infrastructure was damaged, and thousands were left without electricity.

The event featured numerous reports of downed trees, snapped power poles, and localized areas of significant damage. Thunderstorms evolved into organized clusters and outflow-driven wind events. Meanwhile, the most concentrated impacts occurred across Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey, Connecticut, North Carolina, and other surrounding states. Data used in this report originated from preliminary Storm Prediction Center local storm reports.

Wind Damage Dominates Across the Appalachians and Mid-Atlantic

The most significant impacts of the event came from thunderstorm wind damage. Hundreds of reports documented trees and power lines downed across a broad swath of the eastern United States. Particularly hard-hit areas included West Virginia and Virginia, where repeated rounds of storms generated extensive tree damage and power outages.

West Virginia experienced numerous reports of downed trees and widespread electrical disruptions. Several communities in Nicholas, Greenbrier, McDowell, and Raleigh Counties reported trees falling onto roads and power lines. Consequently, hundreds of customers lost electricity. In Beckley, a tree fell onto a home, though no injuries were reported.

The storms intensified as they moved into Virginia, where damage reports became increasingly numerous during the evening hours. Multiple counties, including Spotsylvania, Augusta, Bedford, Franklin, and Roanoke, reported widespread tree damage. Several roads became impassable due to fallen trees, while numerous power outages were reported as trees brought down electrical lines.

One of the most significant incidents occurred near Moneta, Virginia. There, thunderstorm outflow winds caused severe damage resulting in one fatality and 22 injuries.

Farther northeast, storms brought scattered wind damage to Connecticut. There, downed trees, limbs, and power lines caused road closures and outages in parts of Litchfield and New Haven Counties. Storms continued producing damage across Maryland, New Jersey, and New York. For example, multiple reports from Bergen County, New Jersey, described trees falling onto homes and blocking roads.

Measured Wind Gusts Reached Severe Levels

In addition to damage reports, many observing stations measured severe thunderstorm wind gusts exceeding 58 mph. This speed meets the National Weather Service threshold for severe thunderstorms.

Among the strongest measured gusts was a 96 mph wind recorded near Eva in the Oklahoma Panhandle. This represented one of the highest measured thunderstorm wind speeds of the day. Additional severe gusts included 83 mph near Annapolis, Maryland, 83 mph over Chesapeake Bay waters, 77 mph at Wallops Island, Virginia, and 75 mph near Cape St. Claire, Maryland. Virginia also recorded significant measured gusts, including 67 mph at Dulles International Airport and 66 mph near Middleburg. These winds corresponded with numerous reports of tree damage and power outages across northern and central Virginia.

North Carolina Experiences Concentrated Tree Damage

North Carolina experienced numerous reports of wind damage, particularly across Surry County and portions of the foothills. The Mount Airy area was especially hard hit, with at least 20 separate reports of trees down across the city. Several trees fell onto power lines, roadways, and even vehicles. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in these incidents. Additional reports came from Caldwell and Henderson Counties, where multiple roads were blocked by fallen trees and power lines. The storms also produced isolated damage farther east, including a delayed report of a downed tree in Washington County.

Large Hail and Isolated Tornadoes

Although wind was the dominant hazard, severe hail also accompanied some storms. The largest hailstone reported measured 2.75 inches in diameter near Taylor, Nebraska. Golf ball-sized hail was also reported in Kansas and Nebraska, causing vehicle and building damage.

Only two tornado reports were documented during the event. A possible landspout was photographed near Sisemore, Arkansas. Meanwhile, drone footage confirmed tornado damage southeast of Lake Cicott, Indiana, where dozens or possibly hundreds of trees were damaged.

Meteorological Overview

The severe weather event was characterized primarily by organized thunderstorm clusters and powerful outflow boundaries. Outflow boundaries occur when rain-cooled air spreads outward from thunderstorms, creating surges of strong winds. These winds are capable of producing widespread damage, even in the absence of tornadoes. Although tornadoes often receive the most attention, straight-line winds frequently produce impacts comparable to weak tornadoes. In addition, they can cause significant damage across large geographic areas.

As summer thunderstorm season continues across the United States, residents should remain alert for severe thunderstorm warnings. This is especially important when storms are capable of producing damaging winds and widespread power outages.
