
A well-anticipated severe weather setup on June 17, 2026 produced a significant tornado outbreak from the Midwest into the Ohio Valley. The most intense damage was focused in central Illinois. The Storm Prediction Center had placed parts of Illinois and Indiana under a Moderate Risk. This highlighted the potential for strong tornadoes, damaging winds, and large hail. By the end of the event, that forecast concern had verified in a notable way.
The defining tornado of the day occurred near Beecher City in Effingham County, Illinois, where an EF3 tornado produced estimated peak winds of 150 mph. It was one of several tornadoes reported across Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Kentucky, Ohio, Alabama, and Louisiana. Severe storms continued from the afternoon of June 17 into the early morning hours of June 18.
A Moderate Risk That Verified
The June 17 setup had many of the ingredients meteorologists look for on higher-end severe weather days. A line of storms moved across portions of central Illinois during the morning. This left behind a remnant outflow boundary that acted like a localized warm front. That boundary became a focus for new, more intense thunderstorm development later in the day.
In severe weather events, boundaries like this often matter as much as the larger storm system itself. They can locally enhance wind shear, low-level rotation, and storm organization. As a result, thunderstorms have a better chance to produce tornadoes. On June 17, that boundary set up near the I-72 to I-70 corridor. It helped focus some of the day’s most significant storms over central Illinois.
The result was a long-duration severe weather event that featured tornadoes, destructive wind damage, very large hail, and localized flooding. While the outbreak affected several states, central Illinois became the main corridor for the strongest tornado damage.
Illinois, Indiana, and The Effingham EF3
The Beecher City tornado was the standout storm of the day.
Preliminary survey information rated the tornado EF3, with estimated peak winds of 150 mph. The tornado began near Beecher City in Effingham County. It tracked more than 26 miles and reached a maximum width of about 500 yards. Two injuries were reported.
An EF3 rating means a tornado has produced severe damage. At this strength, tornadoes can heavily damage well-built homes, destroy outbuildings, snap or debark trees, and overturn vehicles. Moreover, they cause major impacts to farms, power infrastructure, and rural properties. The Beecher City tornado’s estimated winds were also near the upper end of the EF3 range.
The tornado’s path through Effingham County made it the centerpiece of the outbreak and likely the event’s most memorable storm.
Tornadoes Extend Across the Midwest and Ohio Valley
Although the Beecher City EF3 was the most intense tornado, it was far from the only one.
Earlier in the day, tornadoes developed in Iowa and western Illinois. A brief EF1 tornado touched down near Pekin, Iowa, and another EF1 moved through Monmouth, Illinois. A separate EF1 tornado near Keokuk, Iowa was especially unusual. It crossed parts of three states after forming in Lee County, Iowa.
As storms continued east and northeast, additional tornadoes occurred across Illinois and Wisconsin. In Illinois, tornadoes were confirmed near Salisbury, Blue Mound, Bethany, Glenarm, and Mattoon. The Mattoon-area tornado was rated EF2, with estimated peak winds of 116 mph. Its path length was nearly 14 miles, and it reached a maximum width of 800 yards. One report near Mattoon noted that a semi flipped on southbound I-57, injuring the driver.
Wisconsin also saw tornado damage, including an EF2 that began east-northeast of Waukon, Iowa and crossed the Mississippi River. Additional EF1 tornadoes were confirmed near Boscobel, Ridgeway, and Belleville.
After dark, the tornado threat continued into Indiana, Kentucky, and Ohio. Several EF2 tornadoes were confirmed across this corridor, including tornadoes near Spencer, Indiana; Dillsboro, Indiana; and Franklin County, Indiana into Butler County, Ohio. There were also tornadoes in Scott and Jefferson Counties in Indiana into Kentucky; Mason County, Kentucky; and Pike County, Ohio. These nighttime tornadoes added to the seriousness of the outbreak. Tornadoes after dark are often harder to see and more difficult for the public to respond to quickly.
Farther south, Alabama and Louisiana also recorded tornadoes from the aftermath of Tropical Storm Arthur occurring at the same time. Southeast Alabama had tornado reports near Ewell and Enterprise. Meanwhile, Louisiana saw multiple EF0 and EF1 tornadoes during the morning of June 18, including tornadoes near Houma, Montegut, Boutte, Lacombe, Avondale, Bridge City, New Orleans, Eden Isle, and Treasure Isle. Two injuries were reported with the Avondale tornado.

Wind Damage Beyond the Tornado Tracks
The tornadoes were the headline, but damaging straight-line winds affected a much broader area.
Measured wind gusts reached 78 mph at Cedar Rapids Municipal Airport in Iowa and 78 mph at Decatur Airport in Illinois. Other locations reported gusts between 60 and 70 mph. Many damage reports described snapped power poles, roof damage, trees falling onto homes, downed power lines, damaged outbuildings, and rolled vehicles.
Some of the most notable non-tornadic wind damage occurred in western Illinois. In Warren County, reports described widespread winds of 80 to 100 mph from near Little York toward Ormonde. Damage included downed utility poles, extensive tree damage, and train cars derailed by the wind.
Central Illinois also saw numerous wind damage reports outside the confirmed tornado tracks. Reports included transmission poles blown down near Clinton, semis and campers rolled over near El Paso, and tree and structural damage in Charleston. In addition, power lines were down across multiple counties. These reports are important because they show that the severe weather threat extended well beyond the narrow paths of confirmed tornadoes.
As storms moved into Kentucky, Ohio, and West Virginia, damaging winds continued to bring down trees and power lines. In some areas, concentrated power outages were reported alongside structural and tree damage. This made wind damage one of the most widespread impacts of the entire event.
Large Hail Adds to the Damage
Large hail was a secondary but still meaningful hazard, especially across Illinois and parts of Missouri.
The largest hail reports reached 3 inches in diameter in central Illinois, including reports near Cadwell, Arthur, and Humboldt. Near Lovington, wind-driven tennis ball-size hail reportedly put holes in siding and broke windows. Baseball-size hail was also reported north of Charleston.
Hail of this size can damage vehicles, roofs, siding, crops, and windows, especially when paired with strong thunderstorm winds. While hail was not the main story of June 17, the reports added another layer of damage to an already significant severe weather event.
Advanced Warnings Lend to Lower Preliminary Toll
Despite the intensity of the event, preliminary casualty reports remained lower than they could have been for a multi-state outbreak that continued after dark. Available preliminary information listed several injuries, including two with the Beecher City EF3, one near Mattoon, one with the Spencer, Indiana EF2, one with the Scott County, Indiana EF2, and two with the Avondale, Louisiana EF1.
The combination of advanced outlooks, watches, warnings, and local storm reports helped document a dangerous event. This event will remain important for future meteorological review, insurance and legal analysis, emergency management planning, and historical severe weather research.
