Damaging Winds Sweep Across the Northeast During June 18 Severe Storms

Severe thunderstorms on June 18, 2026 produced a broad area of damaging wind reports from the central Appalachians and Mid-Atlantic into New York and New England. There were numerous downed trees, blocked roads, power outages, and scattered structural damage reported throughout the day.

Although several tornadoes were confirmed, especially in New York, Vermont, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana, wind damage was the defining story of this event. The Northeast saw one of the densest clusters of storm reports. These included widespread tree and utility damage across New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, and Massachusetts.

The Storm Prediction Center had outlined a risk for severe thunderstorms from the central Appalachians into the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, with damaging wind gusts as the primary concern. That forecast verified in the form of fast-moving storms. These repeatedly brought trees and power lines down across communities from western New York into northern New England.

New York Saw Widespread Tree and Utility Damage

New York recorded one of the most concentrated areas of wind damage during the event. Reports began in western New York during the early afternoon. Large trees were reported down near Delevan in Cattaraugus County and additional tree and wire damage was reported across Allegany and Wayne Counties.

As storms moved east, damage reports increased through the Finger Lakes and central New York. In Palmyra, Clyde, Hannibal, Waterloo, Baldwinsville, Savona, Dundee, Rock Stream, Montour Falls, Cortland, Ithaca, and surrounding communities, reports included trees and wires down, roads blocked, trees falling onto homes and vehicles, and utility lines arcing. These arcs happened after being struck by falling branches or trees.

Cortland County was especially active. Around Cortland, multiple reports described trees down across the city, including large trees that fell on vehicles at SUNY Cortland. There was also a tree down on a house, many trees sheared, and one structure with roof damage. Nearby Ithaca also had trees and wires down, including damage reported near Fall Creek and College Avenue. Additionally, there were numerous additional wires down throughout the area.

Farther east, the storms continued into the Mohawk Valley, Capital Region, and eastern New York. Reports included downed trees and wires in Niskayuna, Clifton Park, Saratoga Springs, Canajoharie, Argyle, Granville, Schenectady, Waterford, Troy, and other communities. A measured 60 mph wind gust was reported near Clifton Park in Saratoga County. Nearby reports also included large trees and power lines down, a tree down on a car, and structural damage to siding.

New England Storms Produced Measured Gusts and Numerous Damage Reports

The damaging wind threat continued into New England during the late afternoon and evening, with reports spreading across Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, and Massachusetts.

In Vermont, damage was reported in Addison, Rutland, Washington, Bennington, Windsor, and Windham Counties. Reports included trees and powerlines down in Lincoln, Danby Four Corners, Northfield, Barre, Williamstown, Manchester, Bridgewater, Hartford, Wilder, Dummerston, and Westminster. Some reports described large trees snapped, numerous powerlines blown down, trees impacting a porch, and structural damage to a barn or shed. In addition, there was a significant area of uprooted or broken trees in the Hartford area.

New Hampshire also saw numerous reports of tree and wire damage. A 64 mph gust was measured in Claremont, while nearby reports described multiple trees and power lines down on Red Water Brook Road. Additional damage was reported in Enfield, Canaan, Bath, Grantham, Walpole, Sunapee, Keene, Franklin, Sanbornton, Meredith, Peterborough, Goffstown, Alton, Derry, Windham, Salem, and Portsmouth. In several communities, trees and wires blocked roads. Moreover, one report near Bridgewater noted an injury when a tree fell on a car in a parking lot.

In Maine, the storms produced tree and utility damage from York and Oxford Counties into interior sections of the state. Reports included multiple trees blocking roads in Acton, powerlines down in Denmark, tree damage near Oxford, South Berwick, Kittery Point, Dover-Foxcroft, East Corinth, Newburgh, Eddington, Greenbush, Stetson, Danforth, and Newport. A measured 69 mph gust was reported near Kittery. This was one of the stronger measured gusts of the day in the Northeast.

Massachusetts also experienced scattered but notable wind damage. Reports included trees and wires down in Pittsfield, Bernardston, Ashfield, Greenfield, Warwick, Erving, Winchendon, Ashby, Sheffield, and Rutland. In several cases, trees or large limbs brought down wires or blocked roads.

Tornadoes Were Part of the Event, But Not the Main Story

Several tornadoes were confirmed on June 18, but they were not the dominant hazard compared to the volume of wind damage reports.

In New York, the National Weather Service confirmed an EF1 tornado near Rock Stream in Yates County that crossed Seneca Lake and impacted a residence south of Hector in Schuyler County. The tornado had estimated peak winds of 90 mph. Damage included uprooted trees, snapped vineyard posts, roof and siding damage, and a large tree branch impaled into a house near the lake.

The National Weather Service also confirmed an EF0 tornado near Cortland. That tornado briefly touched down west-southwest of Cortland and produced convergent tree damage along its short path.

Farther north and east, two EF1 tornadoes were confirmed in Vermont, including one near Lincoln and another in the Woodstock area. These tornadoes were embedded within the broader severe storm environment that also produced numerous reports of straight-line wind damage.

Outside the Northeast, additional tornadoes were reported in parts of the Southeast and Gulf Coast region, including Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, and Georgia. Most were rated EF0 or EF1. The associated damage generally involved trees, power lines, and scattered structural impacts.

Hail Secondary and Concentrated to the West

Hail was also reported during the event, but it was much more limited compared to the number of wind reports. The largest hail reports came from Kansas, where golf ball size hail was reported near Anthony and Belle Plaine. Additional hail reports in Kansas and Oklahoma included quarter to half-dollar size stones.

For the Northeast portion of the event, hail was not the main issue. The primary impacts were instead caused by damaging thunderstorm winds, falling trees, and downed utility lines.

A Classic Warm-Season Wind Damage Event

In many communities across the Northeast, the most disruptive weather came from thunderstorm winds strong enough to bring down mature trees, damage homes and vehicles, block roads, and interrupt power.

Fast storm motion, strong winds aloft, and enough instability helped storms organize and move quickly across the region. In that kind of setup, even storms that are not long-lived supercells can still produce pockets of damaging wind. When those storms move through heavily wooded communities, the resulting damage can be widespread and disruptive. This is especially true where trees fall onto roads, homes, vehicles, and power infrastructure.

From western and central New York into Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, and Massachusetts, to further down the East Coast, the storm reports show a day defined by damaging winds. These winds brought many hazards that follow when trees and power lines come down across populated areas.
