
A Stormy Fourth of July Across the Northeast
The Fourth of July is usually remembered for cookouts, fireworks, and crowded outdoor celebrations. In 2026, it also became a significant severe weather day for parts of the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic.
On Saturday, July 4, 2026, severe thunderstorms swept across the region during the evening and overnight hours. The storms produced widespread wind damage, downed trees, power outages, road closures, and scattered reports of large hail. While there were a few tornado reports nationally, the main story for the Northeast was damaging straight-line wind.
Connecticut Takes a Direct Hit
Reports out of Connecticut included trees and wires down near Falls Village and Lakeville in Litchfield County. There were also trees down on wires in North Madison, and a tree and wires down in Cornwall. In addition, trees were down on power lines near Killingworth, and there were trees and wires down on Route 4 in Burlington.
Farther west, New Milford had numerous trees down. Meanwhile, New Fairfield and the Candlewood Lake area saw significant dock damage near Brookfield. The report described a dock turned over onto land. There were additional docks displaced as well.
Southington also had multiple reports, including trees and wires down blocking Andrew Street. There were multiple trees down on I-84. Ridgefield had numerous trees down on wires, resulting in power outages. East Hampton reported numerous outages from downed trees on wires. Ansonia had a road closed because of a tree down on wires, and Wallingford had a tree down on Tuttle Road.
In southeastern Connecticut, North Lyme, Montville, Mystic, Stonington, and Ledyard all reported tree and wire damage. A 65 mph gust was measured near New London at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy mesonet, while a 64 mph gust was measured near Rowayton at Greens Ledge Light.
Those reports are consistent with a damaging thunderstorm wind event. In such events, strong outflow winds spread out ahead of or beneath thunderstorms and bring down trees, wires, and utility infrastructure across a wide area.
Major Holiday Festivities Disrupted
These Fourth of July storms arrived during a major outdoor holiday period, when many people were attending fireworks, traveling, boating, camping, or spending time outside. In Washington, D.C., Fourth of July activities on the National Mall were delayed for hours because of severe weather. As a result, gates reopened later in the evening and fireworks occurred close to midnight.
For Connecticut and the Northeast, the more important local issue was the number of people and properties exposed when the storms moved through. Trees falling onto roads, homes, vehicles, campsites, docks, and power lines created a dangerous situation well after the storms had passed.
Power Outages and Cleanup Continued After the Storms
The storms produced widespread power disruption across Connecticut. Utility outages climbed rapidly Saturday evening as storms crossed the state. Later reporting indicated that around 100,000 outages occurred in the wake of the July 4 storms.
Some of the hardest-hit communities included Harwinton, Torrington, New Fairfield, and other towns in western and northwestern Connecticut. In Harwinton, local officials reported significant damage, blocked roads, and a prolonged cleanup effort. New Fairfield also had multiple road closures and utility pole replacement work after the storm.
This kind of damage pattern is common after high-end thunderstorm wind events. Even when a tornado is not involved, straight-line winds can bring down trees over a large area. Moreover, straight-line winds can knock wires into roads, damage homes and vehicles, and leave communities dealing with cleanup for several days.
Large Hail Adds to the Connecticut Damage Reports
Terryville reported golf ball size hail. Bristol reported hail up to 3 inches in diameter, which is roughly the size of a teacup or larger than a baseball. New Britain reported golf ball size hail as well.
Large hail can be highly localized, but when it occurs alongside damaging winds, it adds another layer to post-storm property investigations. Roof coverings, siding, gutters, vehicles, skylights, outdoor equipment, and soft metals can all show damage. The damage depends on hail size, wind direction, impact angle, and exposure.
The Broader Northeast Wind Damage Corridor
The broader storm report dataset included extensive wind damage across the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, including Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Delaware, and southern New England. Maryland had multiple reports of trees and wires down. Notably, there was an 81 mph measured gust near Henryton in Carroll County and extensive tree damage in parts of the Baltimore and Washington, D.C. suburbs.
Pennsylvania had numerous reports of trees, wires, and utility damage. One of the most serious reports came from Mountain Creek Campground near Pine Grove Furnace. There, falling trees killed two people and injured another. New York and New Jersey also had scattered to numerous reports of trees and wires down. There were measured gusts along parts of Long Island and the nearby waters.
A Significant Severe Weather Day for Connecticut
The Fourth of July storms brought a damaging and memorable end to the holiday for many residents. Trees and wires came down across the state, and power outages affected tens of thousands of customers. Roads were blocked, docks were damaged, and large hail was reported in parts of central Connecticut.
Still, the storms did not stop communities across Connecticut, the Northeast, and the country from marking a meaningful milestone: the 250th anniversary of the United States. Even with delays, cleanup, and a few stormy skies, the day remained one of resilience, celebration, and shared history.
