Storms Leave a Trail of Wind Damage Across North Carolina and the Southern Appalachians on July 10, 2026

July 10, 2026 was a wind-driven severe weather day. Storms left behind numerous reports of downed trees, power lines, structural damage, blocked roads, and scattered power outages from the southern Appalachians into the Carolinas.

North Carolina stood out as the primary impact area. Storm reports stretched from the foothills and western Piedmont through the Charlotte metro. They continued through the Triad-adjacent counties, central North Carolina, and eventually toward the Coastal Plain. South Carolina and Georgia also saw numerous damaging wind reports.

A Wind-Focused Threat in the Southeast

The Storm Prediction Center highlighted the potential for strong to severe thunderstorms across several parts of the country on July 10th. The risk included the Southeast, Mid-Atlantic, Ohio Valley, and portions of the Plains and Midwest. For the southern Appalachians and Piedmont, the setup centered on an MCV moving into the region during the afternoon.

An MCV, or mesoscale convective vortex, is a small-scale area of spin left behind by previous thunderstorm activity. These features can help organize new storms, especially when they move into a warm and unstable air mass. On July 10th, that feature helped support renewed thunderstorm development over the southern Appalachians. In addition, storms developed into the Piedmont by late afternoon.

The main concern was damaging wind. The SPC specifically noted that multicell storms could produce localized damaging gusts. This was especially true where rain-loaded downdrafts became strong enough to bring higher winds to the ground.

North Carolina Takes Brunt of the Wind

North Carolina had the clearest concentration of wind damage reports in the July 10 data. The reports were not limited to one city or one county. Instead, damaging storms affected a long corridor from western North Carolina, through the Piedmont, and into eastern North Carolina.

In the western part of the state, tree damage was reported near Forest City in Rutherford County. Trees were down and a storefront had a door and windows blown in. Cleveland County reported both the EF1 tornado near the town of Casar and additional wind damage near Fallston and Shelby. Lincoln, Catawba, Iredell, and Rowan Counties also recorded several reports of trees and power lines down. Reports came in near Boger City, Terrell, Statesville, China Grove, and Mount Ulla.

Near the Charlotte-area, Davidson reported large trees down on power lines with Main Street closed. Meanwhile, Mecklenburg, Union, Cabarrus, and Stanly Counties recorded additional reports of trees, power lines, and property damage. In Albemarle, the glass front of a shop was blown out. Additionally, a road was blocked by a fallen tree near Locust.

Trees were reported down in across much of the Piedmont counties. These reports included trees on power lines, roads blocked by debris, and trees falling onto homes. Moreover, there was siding damage, shed damage, and scattered outages.

A measured 64 mph wind gust at Coastal Carolina Regional Airport near New Bern helped confirm that the wind threat was not just radar-indicated or damage-based. Furthermore, a separate marine thunderstorm gust of 62 mph was measured over Pamlico Sound. This showed that the storms remained capable of producing severe gusts as they approached eastern North Carolina and nearby coastal waters.

A Broader Carolinas and Southern Appalachian Damage Corridor

South Carolina and Georgia also recorded numerous wind damage reports, especially across the Upstate, Piedmont, Midlands, and Lowcountry.

In South Carolina, early reports included trees down in Gaffney and Blacksburg, with people trapped in two homes by fallen trees in Gaffney. Clover, York County, Laurens County, Anderson, Greenville, Pickens, Lancaster, Kershaw, and other communities reported multiple trees and power lines down. In Whitmire, numerous trees were down, one tree fell on a home, and a building experienced significant damage when an exterior wall collapsed.

Farther south and east in South Carolina, additional damage was reported in the Columbia area, North Augusta, Charleston County, Berkeley County, and the Lowcountry. Near North Charleston, a large crane collapsed into the Cooper River during strong thunderstorm winds. Folly Beach recorded a 64 mph thunderstorm wind gust. Also, offshore waters measured severe-level gusts.

Georgia saw scattered but notable wind damage as well. Reports included trees and power lines down in Fort Oglethorpe, Lincolnton, Toccoa, Hartwell, Augusta, North Augusta-adjacent areas, Monroe, Albany, Hahira, Pelham, and other communities. In Toccoa, emergency management reported numerous trees and power lines down. As a result, there were widespread power outages.

Few Isolated Tornadoes

A few tornadoes were reported on July 10th, but they were not the dominant hazard in this event.

The most significant tornado report in the data came from Cleveland County, North Carolina, where an EF1 tornado touched down near Casar. One injury was reported. The tornado damage began near Parker Road and Jesse Mountain Road, according to preliminary survey information.

Other tornado reports included a landspout in Cape Coral, Florida. There was also a tornado touchdown east of Swaledale, Iowa; a brief touchdown in a corn field near Saybrook, Illinois; and a public report of dust associated with a funnel cloud near Osco, Illinois, with no known damage.

Hail Was Isolated and Secondary

Large hail was not a major part of the July 10 severe weather story. The preliminary hail reports were limited compared with the wind reports. They included quarter-size hail in Florida, Colorado, Kansas, and Missouri.

The largest hail report in the data was golf ball-size hail near Fredonia, Kansas. Additional hail reports included quarter-size hail near Wesley Chapel, Florida; Wild Horse, Colorado; Sylvania, Missouri; and Saint Paul, Kansas. There was also half-dollar-size hail northeast of Plainville, Kansas.

Final Event Summary

The July 10, 2026 severe weather event was a wind-first storm day across the Southeast. North Carolina recorded numerous wind damage reports from the foothills to the Coastal Plain. There were trees down, power lines damaged, roads blocked, and scattered property impacts. South Carolina and Georgia also saw meaningful storm damage, including tree damage, structural impacts, and measured severe wind gusts.

While a few tornadoes occurred, including an EF1 near Casar, North Carolina, this event is best documented as a widespread damaging wind episode across the Carolinas.
